How to Remove PII from Text

What Counts as PII in AI Prompts

Personally Identifiable Information (PII) includes any data that could identify a specific individual. In the context of AI prompts, the most common PII types are email addresses, phone numbers, Social Security Numbers (SSNs), credit card numbers, IP addresses, and names with honorifics such as Dr. Smith or Mr. Johnson. Our tool automatically detects and replaces these with tagged placeholders like [EMAIL], [PHONE], and [PERSON-NAME], so the AI can still understand the structure of your text without accessing the actual private data.

Why Remove PII Before Prompting

When you paste text into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, that text may be stored in logs, used for model training unless you opt out, or accessible to platform employees during safety reviews. If your text contains client emails, patient information, or employee records, you risk violating GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA, or your organization's data handling policies. Detection Capabilities

Our engine detects email addresses, international phone numbers with country codes, US Social Security Numbers in XXX-XX-XXXX format, credit card numbers with 13 to 16 digits, IBAN bank account numbers, cryptocurrency wallet addresses for Bitcoin and Ethereum, API keys from OpenAI, AWS, Google, Stripe, and GitHub, IPv4 addresses, names with honorifics like Dr., Mr., Mrs., Ms., and Prof., US-style street addresses, and common date formats. For names without honorifics, we recommend manual review of the output.
